RC women take 8th at SPC Invite

The Ranger College women's cross country team knew the odds were stacked against them as they headed into the South Plains Invitational Cross Country Championships on Oct. 8 in Levelland. Competing with just five runners in a meet featuring several nationally-ranked teams, as well as several NCAA Division programs isn't a recipe for success.

In the end, the Lady Rangers placed eighth in the 10-team meet. The RC women rolled up 95 points in the event. Wayland Baptist University, New Mexico State, Angelo State and West Texas A&M took the top four spots in the field.

Despite their struggles, Ranger College head coach Katy Graham said the team will benefit from the experience.

"Our women had a hard week," said Graham. "We just took five runners and we didn't run as well as we are capable. However, it was a good learning experience and we will come back ready."

Jessica Thomas-Billot led the Lady Rangers through the 5-kilometer race. The freshman powered her way to a time of 20 minutes, 46.7 seconds and placed 21st overall. Her effort marked the third straight meet this season where she has led the RC women across the finish line.

Catherine Lopez also turned in a solid outing. She finished 33rd with a mark of 21:31.8.

Yenifer Martinez (61st), Alexandra Luna (66th) and Alexandra Evans (74th) also competed for Ranger.
