Lady Rangers’ stars cap careers with all-conference honors
Gloria Guerin, Jasmin Garcia, Sakura Thomas, Jamyah Anderson and Ava Shmueli pounded out memorable careers as part of the Ranger College volleyball program over the past two seasons. Last week, they found the perfect way to end them.
By being named to the All-Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference/Region V Volleyball team.
The Lady Rangers were among a handful of NTJCAC volleyball stars honored with postseason honors this season. The five RC standouts helped the Lady Rangers reach the 20-win plateau for only the second time in the program's history and finish as the conference runner-up in the final regular season standings.
"I thrilled for all of them," said Smith, who guided the team to a 20-8 mark and a berth in the Region V North semifinals. "All of these young ladies are to be commended for their efforts."
Guerin was one of four NTJCAC players earning superlative honors from the conference's coaches. She was tabbed the NTJCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Guerin, a sophomore from Corpus Christi, finished her career ranked among the Lady Rangers' all-time leaders in several categories. North Central Texas' Lindi Boling netted the Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Hill College freshman Izabella Ceratti was the Newcomer of the Year selection. NCTC's Brianna Worth was tabbed the conference's Player of the Year recipient.
Garcia and Thomas joined Guerin on the first-team all-conference/all-region roster.
Garcia emerged as one of the most dominating hitters in the conference this season, while Thomas ranked among the region's top defensive standouts. Garcia finished her career fourth all-time in blocked shots with 141, and 11th all-time in points with 274.5. Thomas was third all-time in digs with 826, and tied with former RC standout Jordan Mahan for sixth all-time in service aces with 42
Anderson, who teamed with Guerin and Garcia to give the Lady Rangers' one of the best scoring/blocking trios in the country, joined Shmueli on the second-team roster.
A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Shmueli ranked among the Lady Rangers' all-time leaders in assists in her only season with the team. She finished the year with 663 assists, the fifth-most in RC team history. Anderson also etched her named deep into the RC record books with 114 blocks (seventh all-time) and 308. 5 points (16th all-time).
