Weatherford rallies past RC women

The Weatherford Lady Coyotes reeled off a 20-11 run in the final 10 minutes of play and sneaked away with a 62-56 victory over Ranger College in Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference play on Jan. 20 in the Ron Butler Gymnasium.

The loss spoiled Herculean efforts by Bre'Asiajah Mathews and Angel Reese. Both RC standouts posted double-double performances against the Lady Coyotes.

The Lady Rangers struggled to get the ball to fall against Weatherford. Ranger College actually shot 22 more attempts at the basket (79-57) but made three fewer shots. As a team, the RC women shot just over 30 percent from the field.

Ranger's early struggles helped Weatherford jump out to a quick lead. The Lady Coyotes posted 14 points in the first quarter. They added 16 more in the second and took a 30-25 lead into the half.

Mathews and Reese got the RC offense rolling in the third. Both knocked down key shots in the frame and spearheaded a 20-12 run that pushed Ranger into the fourth holding a 45-42 cushion.

Ranger's hopes crashed from there. Weatherford closed out the affair with a 20-11 run in the final 10 minutes.

Mathews led all RC scorers by pushing in a game-high 22 points. She also garnered 14 rebounds and had a team-high five steals. Reese finished with 15 points and 12 boards.

Alena Wilson and Sierra Moseley-Jefferson both chipped in six points.

With the loss, Ranger fell to 16-3 for the season and to 2-3 in NTJCAC play.
