Hill deals Lady Rangers a second loss

The Hill College Lady Rebels pieced together a 24-13 run in the second quarter on Saturday and then held on to claim a 73-54 victory over the Ranger College Lady Rangers in front of a small crowd in the Bob Bullock Sports Center in Hillsboro.

The loss was only Ranger's second setback of the 2019-20 season and dropped the team to 16-2 overall. They fell to 2-2 in NTJCAC action.

The Lady Rebels, now half a game in front of Ranger for fourth in the conference standings, jumped out to a quick lead on RC. Hill pushed home a couple of quick shots in the closing minutes of the first quarter and took a 19-13 advantage.

The Hill lead grew to 43-26 at the half.

Bre'Asiajah Mathews and Angel Kelly helped Ranger get its offense going in the third. The two both knocked down clutch shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half and helped RC grind out 16 points.

As a team, the Lady Rangers struggled offensively. The team shot just 38.5 percent from the field, hitting on only 20 of its 52 attempts.

Mathews finished as Ranger's top scorer by netting 14 points. Kelly and Alena Wilson both added 10, while sophomore Loryn Wooden chipped in six.

Angel Reese led all RC rebounders with five.

The Lady Rangers will return to action on Monday when they host Weatherford College. The game will begin at 5 p.m. in the Ron Butler Gym.
