Reese, Mathews lead RC to romp over HC

Angel Reese and Bre'Asiajah Mathews both recorded double-double performances in their first outings of the new year and helped carry the 25th-ranked Ranger College Lady Rangers to a resounding 63-38 victory over Howard College in a nonconference showdown in the Ron Butler Gym.

With the victory, Ranger College closed out its non-conference schedule with a perfect 15-0 mark.

The Lady Rangers, who survived a nail-biting overtime challenge by Howard a few days earlier, wasted no time in putting the Lady Hawks on their heels. After pumping in 14 points in the first 10 minutes of play and building a slim 5-point cushion, Reese and the RC offense took off. The Lady Rangers outscored Howard by a staggering 23-11 clip in the second quarter and took a comfortable 37-20 lead into the half.

RC closed out the romp with a solid showing in the fourth quarter. Reese and Mathews both sank clutch shots in the frame to spearhead an 18-8 outburst.

A sophomore, Reese closed out the game with game-high marks in scoring and rebounding. She tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds, as well as two steals and two assists. Mathews chalked up 12 points and 11 boards while handing out a team-high five assists.

Alena Wilson narrow missed becoming the third RC player to reach double-double status. She scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds

Sierra Mosley-Jefferson and Imani McNeal also played well for the Lady Rangers. Both finished with seven points off the bench. Angel Kelly added five points.
