Ranger men place 9th at national golf tourney

Kittiphong Phaithunchareonsuk and Grant Ferreira both turned in solid outings this past week and helped carry the Ranger College men's golf team to a ninth-place finish at the NJCAA Division I men's national golf tournament in Lubbock. The tournament, which featured the top 24 teams in the country, was held May 10-13 at The Rawls Golf Course.

As a team, Ranger finished with a total of 1,192 strokes over the four rounds. That total tied the Rangers with Jefferson State Community College for ninth overall. Hutchinson Community College fired 1,136 and edged out Odessa College and Midland College for the team championship. Odessa was second at 1,145 while Midland was third at 1,155. Ranger's other Region V rival, Western Texas, tied with Garden City for fourth with a mark of 1,173.

Phaithunchareonsuk led RC on the course. After opening the meet with a 1-over-par 73 on the first day, he came back and carded back-to-back rounds of 72 and entered the final round just one stroke over par and sitting in the top 20 individually. He finished with a round of 75 on Monday and took 14th overall at 292.

Ferreira chalked up a 7-over 295 and placed 29th in the individual standings.

Luke Stock and Howon Kim also played well for RC. Stock finished with a final mark of 304 and placed 51st. Kim posted a final score of 307 and was 59th.

Kolt Bennett played the final round and turned in a score of 76.
