Former RC star wins The Prestige tournament

It didn't take former Ranger College standout Jacob Skov Oleson long to make his mark at the NCAA Division I level. The 2020 NJCAA Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award winner at RC, he notched his first career NCAA victory on Feb. 17 by winning at the 21st Annual Prestige college golf tournament at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.

One of the top men's college golf tournaments in the country. The Prestige featured five of the country's top nine teams, as well as many of the top-rated players in the most recent GolfWeek team rankings. Among the squads participating were No. 2 San Diego State and No. 4 Arizona, along with No. 6 Arizona State, No. 8 Pepperdine and No. 9 SMU.

None could outshine Oleson.

The former RC standout was one of just three golfers to complete all three rounds at or below par. He finished in a three-way tie for first place with a 4-under par 209 total over the three rounds, which were played at the 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course on Feb. 15-17.

"We couldn't be more proud of what he's done," said Ranger College golf coach Jared Harriman. "He proved he could play with top-ranked players."

A sophomore at TCU, Oleson tied for the top spot with Arizona's Trevor Werbylo and Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg. Overall, he missed par on just nine of the 54 holes, including just twice over the final 18 holes.

With Oleson leading the way, TCU finished seventh in the final team standings. Arizona and North Carolina tied for first in the team standings at the end of the third round. Darkness prevented tournament officials from holding a playoff.

A year ago, Oleson teamed with Brandon Shong to give Ranger College the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked players in the junior college ranks. The two helped propel RC to the No. 1-ranking in Golf Stat's NJCAA rankings for much of the season.

Shong now stars at the University of New Mexico.
