Lady Rangers take 4th at regional meet

Heading into the Region V Cross Country Championships, Ranger College coach Kathy Graham knew her squad had a chance at finishing in the top four in the team standings. She also knew it would take a solid showing by all five of her runners, especially since the team's No. 2 runner would not be competing.

The Lady Rangers delivered the performance Graham wanted.

"We rested our No. 2 runner and still made fourth," said Graham. "We had solid performances by all the ladies as each of them ran faster (times) than they did two months ago when we ran on this same course. Some of them ran more than two full minutes faster. I couldn't be more proud of the way these young women competed."

As a team, Ranger College finished with 122 points, two points ahead of North Central Texas College.

South Plains won the Region V crown with 35 points, New Mexico Junior College and El Paso Community College took second and third, respectively.

Natali Mireles highlighted the Lady Rangers' efforts. She finished 15th in the individual standings with a time of 21 minutes, 11.0 seconds.

Aylin Huerta and sophomore Yenifer Martinez also did well in the 5-kilometer race. Huerta took 21st overall with a run of 21:43.33, while Martinez was 28th at 22:55.77.

Fae Gonzalez and Paula Moreno rounded out RC's efforts. Gonzalez was 35th at 24:19.19, while Moreno was 42nd at 27:47.88.
