Lady Rangers rally to win home opener

The Ranger College Lady Rangers' home opener was a lot like a rock rolling down a hill. It started slowly but once it got going, there was no stopping the momentum.

Ranger College defended its home court on Tuesday evening by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to claim a hard-fought victory over the Western Texas College Lady Westerners. Backed by outstanding play from Gloria Geurin and Sakura Thomas, the RC women won their final three frames of the best-of-five series to nab a win in front of a large crowd in the Ron Butler Gymnasium.

With the win, Ranger College ran its record to 3-1 heading into this weekend's appearance in the Wrangler-Ranger Volleyball Round Up.

Western Texas grabbed the upper hand early. They put the Lady Rangers' backs against the wall by grinding out wins of 25-23 and 25-17 in the first two games.

Ranger, which also benefitted from solid play from setter Ava Schmueli and Macie Morgan, fought its way back. They won the next two games 25-17 and 25-22 to force a fifth frame.

"When we got down 2-0, we didn't panic," said Geurin. "Volleyball is a very mental game. We learned from our mistakes and came back. I'm very proud of the way we played."

Ranger won the decisive game, 15-10.
