Lady Rangers reach Region V championship game for first time

The Ranger College women's soccer team finished off one of its more successful seasons on Saturday, Oct. 27, by making its first-ever appearance in the championship game of the Region V Soccer Championships in Cleburne, Texas.

"This is historic for us," said Ranger College coach Rafael Gonzalez. "They team has played well, and we should only get better from here."

The Lady Rangers even made a strong push at upsetting 18th-ranked Hill College in the finals. After falling behind by a 3-0 margin, the Lady Rangers hit stride. Angely Carreno blasted a pass from Paola Camacho past Hill's goalie in the 78th minute of play and pulled RC to within 3-1.

America Cespedes cut into Hill's lead even more less than two minutes later. The hero of the Lady Rangers' 2-1 semifinal victory over Western Texas on Thursday, Cespedes turned another pass from Camacho into a goal.

Cespedes' shot, which came at the 79:26 mark of the matchup, pulled Ranger to within 3-2.

Unfortunately for Ranger, the Lady Rebels eked out a goal five minutes later to seal the victory.

With the loss, Ranger finished its season with a 7-5-2 record.
