Third-ranked Ranger women roll to TJC title

The Ranger College women's golf team didn't take many golfers to the 2018 Tyler Junior College Intercollegiate Invitational on Oct. 22. What they lacked in numbers they more than made up for in skill as they added a new note to the college's history books.

The Lady Rangers, who are ranked third in the latest Golfstat national poll, had all five golfers place in the top 15 and rolled to its second-ever tournament title. Ranger College finished the two-day meet with a final mark of 654 and finished 12 strokes better than Bethany College of Kansas in the team standings. Murray State College of Oklahoma was third, 22 strokes behind the Lady Rangers.

"The entire team played well," said RC head coach Houston Moore. "They all played well enough to get into the top 15."

Iman Adams paced the Lady Rangers' efforts on the Pine Springs Golf Club course. She kicked off the tournament by penciling in a first-round score of 80. Sitting seventh after the first 18 holes, she managed to move up one spot in the final standings by posting an 81 in the final round to finish at 161.

Adams' total was just 11 strokes off the pace of Murray State's Rian Moores, who took top honors with a two-round mark of 150. Bethany's Savannah Pinson was second overall at 153.

Ashlynn Watley and Jessica Shurety followed Adams in the final standings, checking in at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Watley posted rounds of 83 and 80, respectively, and finished seventh at 163. Shurety, backed by a solid first-round score of 80, finished in a tie with Tyler's Avery Watkins for eighth. Both carded final scores of 164.

La-eeqah Adams and Taylor Lewallen also played well for RC. Adams fired rounds of 83 and 84, respectively, and tied for 10th in the individual standings with a two-day total of 167. Houston-Victoria's Kelly Swanson also finished at 167.

Lewallen and Tyler's Charnay Williams tied for 13th with a two-day total of 171.

The Ranger College women will return to action on Nov. 2 when they compete in the Conference Preview tournament in Burleson, Texas.
