Lady Rangers shatter school mark at Tarleton Invite
The Ranger College women's golf team might not have finished at the top of the Tarleton State Invitational leaderboard on Sept. 11, but they did leave Squaw Valley Golf Course with plenty to be proud of. En route to a seventh-place finish in the two-day tournament, the Ranger women shattered the school's single-round mark.
"We played well in the first round," said coach Houston Moore. "Round two was a tough go for our girls. In these upcoming two weeks before our next tournament we have to figure things out."
The Lady Rangers had everything going their way in the first round on Monday. Paced by rounds of 76 by sophomore Ashlyn Watley and freshman Jessica Shurety, the team carded a mark of 308 – easily besting the women's previous best score in a round of 324, which was set in 2017.
Watley and Shurety both finished four over par the first 18 holes.
Ranger College also picked up a solid showing from La-eeqah Adams and Iman Adams. La-eeqah posted an opening round of 77. Iman tallied a 79.
As a team, Ranger went into the Tuesday's final round trailing St. Edward''s University for the lead by just 21 strokes. Texas A&M-Commerce stood in second after the opening round with a mark of 292, three strokes ahead of Tarleton State.
The wheels came off the Lady Rangers' wagon in the second round. Despite a round of 75 by Shurety, Ranger combined for a mark of 331, the second-highest mark in the round among the eight teams participating in the meet. Only Redlands Community College carded a high second-round total (342).
Shurety finished in a three-way tie for 13th in the individual standings. Her two-day mark was 151.
Iman Adams was Ranger's second-highest finishing player. She fired a final round of 81 on Tuesday and finished 31st at 160. La-eeqah Adams, who struggled over the back 18 to post an 86, finished in a tie for 34th with a final mark of 163.
Watley and freshman Taylor Lewallen enjoyed consistent outings on the Squaw Valley course. Watley posted an 89 on the second day of play and placed 37th with a score of 165. Lewallen posted rounds of 85 and 84, respectively, and took 39th at 169.
Mikayla Flores and Hannah Williams also did well. Flores posted rounds of 91 and 86 and finished in a tie for 41st at 177. Williams fired rounds of 87 and 92 and placed 43rd at 179.
