Lady Rangers upend WOSC in home opener

MarShalia Lollie scored 24 points and Shan'Qaykia Stanton added 14 more on Wednesday and helped the Ranger College women's basketball team make a successful showing in their first home appearance of the 2018-19 season on Wednesday. Backed by Lollie, Stanton and double-digit efforts from Jaylan Gulley and Kylah Mize, the Lady Rangers pounded out a 67-63 victory over Western Oklahoma State College in front of a small crowd in the Ron Butler Gymnasium.

With the victory, Ranger improved to 2-0 for the season. The RC women had opened their season two days earlier with a victory over Cedar Valley.

A sophomore guard from Dallas, Gulley helped the Lady Rangers get off to a quick start against Western Oklahoma State. She poured in six of her 11 points in the first 10 minutes of the contest and spurred Ranger to a quick 16-7 advantage.

Stanton and Carolyn Thomas also aided the Lady Rangers' first quarter success by nailing clutch three-point shots.

Western Oklahoma fought its way back to within five in the second quarter. The Lady Pioneers, now 1-1, outscored Ranger by a 17-13 clip in the frame and went into the half trailing by a 29-24 clip.

Lollie stole the momentum from Western Oklahoma State in the third. The former DeSoto (Texas) High School standout led a 24-17 third-quarter run by the RC women by pumping in 11 of her game-high effort in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Stanton and Ny'Keria Jones added six and five, respectively, in the frame.

Western Oklahoma State rallied in the fourth. The Lady Pioneers went on a late run and pulled to within 62-59 with less than three minutes left in the contest.

Fortunately for the Lady Rangers, Kylah Mize came up big for RC in the fourth. She scored 10 of the Lady Rangers 14 fourth-quarter points and helped the Lady Rangers weather the late push.

Ranger College will return to action on Monday, Nov. 12, when they travel to Big Spring to face off with the Howard College Lady Hawks. The game against Howard will mark the start of a six-game road swing for RC. Their next home game will be Dec. 3 against Mountain View College.
