Lady Rangers finish season with split against Weatherford

The Ranger College women's softball team put a solid finish to their 2019 season on Saturday with an impressive outing against Weatherford College on Sophomore Day at Ron Butler Field. The Lady Rangers split their two games with Weatherford and finished just one game shy of the 20-win plateau.

Ranger, keyed by a two-run double from Abby Luna, opened the twinbill with an 11-3 romp in Game 1. The RC women collected RBIs from eight different players in the contest – including one apiece by all four graduating sophomores.

Luna gave RC the boost it needed early. She blasted a one-out double to center in the first inning that scored two runners. Her hit was one of five the Lady Rangers had in the frame and keyed a 4-0 start.

Ranger iced the game in the fourth. Mercedes Vergara, Alyssa Berlanga, Sidney Garza and Elizabeth Battle all came home with runs in the frame and helped RC build an 8-3 cushion.

Freshman Darrian Smith picked up her 11th win of the season. Ranked among the top hurlers in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, she held the playoff-bound Lady Coyotes to just four hits in seven innings.

Weatherford rallied to win Game 2. After falling behind 4-1, the Lady Coyotes scored six runs in their final two at-bats and escaped with a 7-5 decision.

Ranger, which had just three sophomores on its roster, finished the season at 19-33 overall. They went 12-20 in NTJCAC play, including a pair of wins over defending NJCAA national champion Temple College.

Closing out their RC careers were sophomores Allyson Rodriguez, Alyssa Berlanga, Elibath Battle and freshman Natalie Scherrey.
