Rangers shine at ASU Invite

On paper, the Ranger College men's cross-country team's sixth-place finish at the 2020 Angelo State University Blue & Gold Invitational might not seem too impressive. Dig a little deep, however, and you'll notice the Rangers finished first among the two-year programs at a meet dominated by NCAA 4-year squads.

"The men are improving each race," said head coach Kathy Graham. "We placed sixth overall, but we were first among junior college teams to finish."

West Texas A&M edged out Dallas Baptist and Texas A&M International for the top spot at the Oct. 16 meet in San Angelo.

Jeremias Serreno-Velez continued to turn heads on the trails this fall. The sophomore raced his way to fourth in the individual standings with a time of 25 minutes, 41 seconds. His mark was less than 7 seconds off the winning pace of 25:34.3 set by Texas A&M-Commerce's Nicodemus Rotich.

"He ran a very good race," said Graham.

Hugo Chavarria, fresh off a win at the 2020 RC William Graham Invitational, Christian Parra and Jacob Ozuna also ran well for RC. The three finished in a tight group, a fact that helped the Rangers edge past ASU in the team standings. Chavarria finished the 8-kilometer event in 31st with a time of 27:36.6. Parra checked in at No. 32 at 27:43.5, while Ozuna was 39th at 28:00.6.

Cole Robinson, Allen Price and Jalen Ledesma also did well, giving RC seven runners in the top 50. Robinson crossed the finish line with a mark of 28:24.7 and took 43rd. Price was 44th at 28:30.3, while Ledesma was 48th at 28:56.6.

Angel Torres, William Alm and Dylan Sasser also turned on solid outings for the RC men.
