Rangers advance to national golf tournament

The Ranger College men's golf team is headed back to the NJCAA Promised Land.

Led by the country's top-ranked golfer in Mark Foelbaek, the Rangers punched out their second-ever trip to the NJCAA golf tournament this past weekend by turning in a solid outing at the Region V Golf Championships. The Rangers finished fourth in the overall team standings at the meet, which finished on April 28 at Diamondback Golf Course in Abilene.

"I'm proud of the way the team played," said RC head golf coach Houston Moore, whose team is ranked sixth nationally, according to the latest Golf Stat poll. "They worked hard to get to this point, and we're excited to see how we can do at the national tournament."

A native of Jeliig, Denmark, Foelbaek turned in a strong performance over the final three rounds of the tournament. He carded rounds of 69, 66 and 76 en route to placing third in the individual standings with a final mark of 423. A University of Nebraska signee, he fired scores of 75, 69 and 68 in the tournament's first three rounds, which were played April 21 at Tanglewood Golf Course in Waco.

Brandon Shong and Brandon Geere also did well in the tournament. After recording marks of 73, 74 and 73 at Tanglewood, Shong finished strong over the final three rounds, shooting scores of 70, 71 and 72 at Diamondback.

Overall, Shong finished 10th in the region's individual standings with a final score of 433.

Geere placed 11th overall, one stroke behind Shong. He turned in scores of 73, 74 and 75 in Waco, and finished with rounds of 70, 66 and 76 in Abilene.

George Faulkner and Pheemawat Wimonrat also played well in the six-round tournament. Faulkner finished with a score of 446, while Wimonrat checked in at 458.

Ranger will tee off in the national tournament on May 11 in Melbourne, Florida. The tournament will run through May 17.

The Rangers' only other appearance in the national tournament came in 2016.
