RC golfers grab top spot at NMMI Invitational

The Ranger College men's golf team made sure everyone stood up and took notice of them on Sept. 25-26 in Roswell, N.M. by tying No. 1-ranked Midland College for the top spot in the final team standings at the New Mexico Military Institute Bronco Invitational.

"We played well as a team," said Ranger College coach Houston Moore.

Overall, Ranger finished the two-day tournament with rounds of 278 and 277 for a total of 555. Midland College, who found itself in third after the first round, rallied to catch RC in the standings by firing a 273 over the final 18 holes. Nationally-ranked Western Texas College was third, 10 strokes off the pace at 565.

Pheemawat Wimonrat added to Ranger's dominance at the tournament, which was held on the NMMI Golf Course. The RC standout tied for the individual medalist honors with Midland College's Callum Bruce.

A freshman from Thailand, Wimonrat opened the tournament with a bang. He carded a 67 over the first 18 holes and rolled into the final round among the leaders. The only golfer to post a lower first round score than Wimonrat was Eastern Arizona College's Brodie Whitbread, who shot a 5-under 65 through the first 18.

Wimonrat continued to stay near the top in the second round. He shot a 2-under 68 and finished with a two-day total of 135.

Callum, who stood 10th overall after the first round with a 70, posted a 65 on the final day of action to move into a tie for the top spot.

Mark Foelbaek chalked up his second straight impressive outing on the links. The winner of the season-opening High Country Showdown a few days earlier, the sophomore posted rounds of 68 and 70 and tied for fourth overall with a score of 136. Brandon Shong, a freshman from Australia, also tied for fourth after notching rounds of 70 and 68.

Ranger College also picked up solid outings from Brandon Geere, who placed 29th overall, as well as Jamison White (38th), Dalton Doerr (41st) and Jay Garner (47th).

The Ranger College men will return to action on Oct. 22 when they compete in the Tyler Junior College Invitational
