RC men take 3rd at High Country Showdown

The Ranger College men's golf team turned more than a few heads this past weekend with an historic performance at the High Country Showdown in Ruidosa, N.M. The RC men's team, backed by a sweep of the top two individual positions, shattered five school records en route to taking third in the tournament standings.

Making the team's performance even more impressive is the fact the Rangers finished 41 strokes under par and placed ahead of three nationally-ranked teams, including third-ranked Odessa College, seventh-ranked Western Texas College and 13th-ranked Eastern Arizona.

"I was very pleased with how we played," said Ranger College head golf coach Houston Moore.

As a team, Ranger finished with a three-round total of 823 and finished just two strokes behind New Mexico Junior College for second. Midland College won the team crown with a mark of 815.

Mark Foelbaek etched his name into RC history at the meet. A sophomore from Denmark, Foelbaek became just the fourth Ranger College golfer to win the High Country Shootout. He posted rounds of 65, 63 and 65 en route to carding a 23-under par mark of 193.

Foelbaek shattered three school marks in the process of winning the season-opening tournament, including notching the lowest mark ever for a RC golfer after the first 18, 36 and 54 holes of play.

Pheemawat Wimonrat also played well for the Rangers. He posted rounds of 65, 69 and 65 and finished second overall, just six strokes off Foelbaeck's wining pace.

Just how impressive was Wimonrat's play? Consider this: each of his rounds would have bettered the school's previous marks after 18, 36 and 54 holes had Foelbaek not shattered them moments before.

Brandon Geere gave Ranger three top-10 finishers with a final mark of 203. His 13-under par effort was enough to tie him with Julius Kreutzer of New Mexico JC and Odessa College's Marcus Wochner for sixth.

Brandon Shong also did well for RC. He pounded out a 13th-place mark by firing a 10-under 206.

Dalton Doer, Jay Garner and Jamison White also competed in the tournament for the Rangers.
